The In-Between Season: How to Dress When the Weather Can't Make Up Its Mind

The In-Between Season: How to Dress When the Weather Can't Make Up Its Mind - The PM Edit

August is a liar.

It looks like summer. It feels like summer until 4pm, when the temperature drops ten degrees and you're standing outside in a sundress wondering where you went wrong.

Transitional dressing, that awkward stretch between summer and fall, is genuinely the hardest season to navigate. Not because the clothes don't exist, but because most people approach it wrong. They either hold onto summer too long or pivot to fall too early, and both feel off.

The answer isn't a new wardrobe. It's five specific pieces that live in the in-between.

Not a light layer. Not a heavy coat. The longline cardigan is the transitional piece that does the most work with the least effort. Wear it open over a summer dress when it's warm. Belt it over a turtleneck when it isn't. The length adds structure to any outfit and the open front means you're never overdressed.

Look for one in a neutral - ivory, camel, or a classic pattern like houndstooth - so it works across everything in your wardrobe.

2. The Structured Handbag

Summer bags are casual by nature. As the season shifts, your bag is often the first thing that signals the change before you've touched your wardrobe at all. A structured handbag in a warm neutral (brown, tan, cognac) reads as fall-ready without requiring a full outfit overhaul.

It's the lowest-effort, highest-impact transitional swap you can make.

3. Layered Jewelry

A single chain, small studs, nothing too heavy. Fall jewelry is richer, more layered, more intentional. The transition is as simple as adding one more necklace to what you're already wearing. Stack a mid-length pendant over your usual short chain and suddenly the same outfit reads differently.

4. The Crossbody Bag

Fall is a busier season. More events, more movement, more days that start one place and end somewhere else entirely. A hands-free crossbody with a chain strap handles all of it without sacrificing the polish of a structured bag. It's practical in a way that still looks considered.

5. Oversized Sunglasses

Don't put them away yet. Sunglasses work well into October. The light is still strong, and a great pair of frames finishes a transitional outfit in a way nothing else does. They're the punctuation mark on a look that might otherwise feel unresolved.

The Philosophy

Transitional dressing isn't about buying new things for a new season. It's about identifying the pieces that exist outside of seasons entirely; the ones that work in August and October and everywhere in between. Build around those, and the in-between stops feeling like a problem.
